About this trip...

With breathtaking sights, fresh air, and a good possibility of wildlife sightings this trip is an amazing adventure providing great photography opportunities.
Enjoy this pedal during the famed golden hour, a wonderful time of the day where the early evening lighting tends to yield amazing pictures. You'll have lots of opportunity to capture the sights as you journey along the dimly lit valley floor at the edge of the silhouetted Wallowa Mountains.

We'll begin our trip departing from Joseph. Our first encounter will be with the Wallowa River as we pedal across a rickety 116 year old trestle where you'll see the flowing waters a dizzying 10 feet below!... Next we'll venture into the dense pine forest which will lead us lead us into the wide open valley with a vast colorful sky above.

You'll enjoy a brief stop at our midpoint lounging and enjoying the sights as we turn the cars around. After that you'll make your way back up to Joseph with the Wallowa mountains drenched in the last bit of sunlight by your side.

Who is this trip for?

If you enjoy taking photos of amazing landscapes or just want to soak in some awesome sights this trip is for you!

With the potential for low lighting and uneven terrain this trip isn’t good for infants or children under 2.

We have a 300lb weight limit per seat.

What happens on the trip?

Start

You will meet with your guide and learn some safety information prior to your trip. You will depart as a spaced out group.

You will have a few road crossing stops along the way.

Midpoint

At our midpoint you may carefully get off of your Railrider. This is a great time to stretch your legs as your guide turns around your Railriders.

You will re-board after your guide rotates the cars for your return trip. This is a great time let your guide know if you need a seat adjustment.

Return Leg

This is the “uphill” portion. It is a gentle yet consistent uphill grade back to Joseph. It will be nice and cool so this shouldn’t be much trouble for anyone.

Pace is key, take it slow and steady and the ride will be easier. The electric assist will be there to lend a hand.

Home Base

Congratulations you made it! Checkout our souvenir shop and museum area in our depot.

Don’t forget to share pictures and stories of your adventure with friends and family.

Now it’s time to decide which trip to conquer next. They are all special in their own way.

What should / may we bring?

Storage is limited but there is room for some essentials.

*remember the more you bring the more you pedal

Essentials you should bring

  • Water / Sports Drink (every seat has at least one cup holder that will fit a standard 20 ounce water bottle)
  • Appropriate Outerwear (sweater, jacket, enclosed shoes, etc.) Please research your riding conditions so you come prepared, Joseph nights can certainly get chilly.
  • Picture Taking Apparatus (Camera, cellphone, goPro, whatever you have if it can take pictures in low light you might spot something worth capturing)

We offer drinks and snacks for sale at our Joseph departure site at reasonable rates.

Nice things to have

  • Smiles
  • Fun stories
  • A keen eye for wildlife
  • Cash/card for souvenirs
  • A treat for your guide
  • Your guide will be armed with a tranquilizer rifle (not real) and bear spray (real) in case there are any unexpected visitors.

💡 Tips for a fun trip

It can still be quite cool here in Wallowa County in May and June and once September comes around it starts again so a jacket or windbreaker may be helpful. It’s typically cool at night all year long.

What happens at the mid-point?

Your brief midpoint stop in the middle of the Wallowa Valley is a great place to stretch your legs and sit back in your seat and soak in the sights.

Your guide will turn around the Railriders and will have everyone sit back down before the start of your return journey. There will be no restroom at the mid-point.

What does Joseph have to offer?

During the day, Joseph has all sorts of services; adventure, shopping, food, drink,  public restrooms, parks, motels,  lodges, BnBs, RV parks, and more.

Things to see and do in Joseph.

There is a lot to do in Joseph, we’ll offer some of our favorites.

  • Ride with Joseph Branch Railriders, of course.
  • Take out a one-of-a-kind Glass Bottom Kayak with JO Paddle.
  • Soak in the Joseph main street Artwalk. Larger than life bronze statues occupy nearly every corner throughout town.
  • Explore the many wonderful shops and restaurants on Main Street offering everything from souvenirs to fine art and dining.
  • Visit Wallowology a science and natural history funseum that will immerse you in the natural history of Wallowa county.
  • Ready for more adventure? Seek out Winding Waters River Expeditions. There are thrills around every bend when you venture out on white water. They also offer fishing tours and rent recreational equipment.
  • Joseph is surrounded by some of the most astounding nature one can dream of. Visit the Forest Services’ Wallowa Mountains Office for loads of info on great places to hike, camp, and explore.
  • Wallowa Lake State Park is a great place to explore, you can also enjoy the lake on the North side at the county park / boat launch.
  • History buff? Check out the Wallowa County Museum and the Maxville Heritage Center for a glimpse of Wallowa county past.
  • Wallowa Lake, spend time there, don’t miss it if you can help it.
  • Also don’t miss Joseph City Park. The brand new playground was hand built by the community of Joseph. We’re super proud of it and we welcome you to enjoy it with us. There is a splash pad too that operates in the summer which is a great way to cool down.

That’s a lot to soak in, but that’s just scratching the surface of what Joseph and Wallowa County has to offer. Visit the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce for more places of interest.

Important safety information

Road Crossings

This trip requires you to cross three active road crossings in low lighting situations, it is very important that you stop and look both ways before you cross and always keep your cars headlight on.

We do not have the right-of-way and people will not be looking for you so this needs to be taken seriously.

Balance and uneven ground

Most of your trip will take place in lower than normal lighting. The ground surrounding the tracks is uneven and has lots of loose gravel. Remain on board your Railrider until told otherwise. Walk slowly and watch your step.

Insect Bites

It’s certainly possible to get some mosquito bites out there. However it’s pretty rare. We recommend using bug spray if you are concerned.

If you have a serious allergy please come prepared with your EpiPen or medication if needed and notify your guide of your allergy prior to riding.

Seat Belts

A lap seat belt must be worn whenever your Railrider is in motion.

Bigfoot & other critters

We are not responsible for loss or damages due to the acts of “mythical” or natural creatures.

Emergency Changes / Cancellations

Communication is key, if you absolutely have to make a short notice change or cancellation, please contact us prior to your scheduled arrival time and we will discuss your options. We are a family run, human company, extenuating circumstances will be addressed on a case by case basis but we do encourage you to add trip protection to protect your investment.

Unforeseen Company Wide Closure

Rail bike companies rely on lots of moving parts and entities who must consistently shake hands for operations to run smoothly and for many aspects to run at all. Being such a rare entity makes this extra interesting and challenging.

In the event of a company wide closure we will make every effort to refund existing bookings and outstanding gift card balances. We will not be responsible or liable for any other costs, e.g. lodging, travel, loss of wages, etc.

If something like this would to happen we ask for your patience and understanding as this would mean the loss of our livelihood for our family.

Final Thoughts

We understand there is sometimes a need to adjust or cancel bookings, that’s life, but things such as last minute cancellations, late arrivals, and no shows often prevent others who may want to go from having an opportunity to do so. We try to keep our policies fair, but we also strive to limit these occurrences as much as possible. We are here if you need assistance rescheduling and may get you a gift card if you need to wait. We appreciate your understanding.

Joseph Branch Trip Protection

During booking guests are offered the opportunity to add Joseph Branch Trip Protection (JBTP) to their booking for a small 10% fee. With JBTP, changes are permitted up until 12 hours before departure & cancellations made inside of the 72 hour window and at least 12 hours before departure will receive a full ticket value refund back to the original form of payment. Booking and JBTP fees will not be refunded.

Cancellation requests must be submitted via email to info@jbrailriders.com.

Cancellation requests within the 12 hour cutoff will not receive a refund regardless of the purchase of JBTP.

In the event of a company-initiated cancellation Guests with JBTP will receive a full ticket value refund back to their original form of payment, less the JBTP and booking fees.

Poor Condition Rain Check Gift Card Refund

We reserve the right to cancel outings for any reason we deem necessary. If this happens we will make every effort to work with you to find an alternative time or date for you to enjoy Railriding. If we cannot make that happen we will issue a full ticket value refund via a Rain Check gift card*.

We are very cautious when it comes to our guest and guide safety. However, if we deicide that we will operate a trip in conditions that you don’t want to ride in and you choose to cancel due to those conditions you will receive a credit in the form of a Rain Check gift card*. This applies to an at the time of the trip decision. All other cancellations or changes will be subject to our standard terms.
